Winter Vacation!

I cannot believe that winter vacation is upon us. It seems like just yesterday that I was trying to memorize all of my students' names. It's amazing how time goes by so quickly. I hope that you have a relaxing break, and create happy memories with your families, friends, and loved ones.

Although I do not have any specific homework assigned throughout our 2 week vacation, I ask that you make sure your child finishes his or her 1st Rebbecca Caudill book. By the end of February, students will have to read at least 3 books, and have passed an Accelerated Reader test for each book.

See you in 2008!!!

A note about reading...

Advanced Reading: A hearty congratulations goes out to all students who just completed their A Wrinkle in Time final test. This was a major test that truly assessed students' comprehension of the story as well as their understanding of the major themes presented in the book. I am in the process of grading the tests and am very happy with what I see.

Reading: We are about to finish our Tuck Everlasting Novel study. Next week students will read the Epilogue to discover what Winnie's final decision is. Will she drink from the magical spring and marry Jesse, or will she live an ordinary life? The answer will be revealed next week...

Students have completed the first draft of their expository compositions! We used several graphic organizers to help organize ideas and thoughts into complete sentences and paragraphs. From what I've seen, it looks like our writing skills are improving. Over the weekend they should write a second draft.

I will be conducting individual conferences with every student Monday-Wednesday of next week. I look forward to providing feedback. I encourage parents to read their student's composition and provide feedback as well!

The sixth graders will be starting an Expository Composition Unit. This unit will start on 12/6 by introducing students to the format and topics. On Friday 12/7 all students will go to the IMC to research their topic. I encourage all students to continue their research over the weekend. Next week we will begin the writing process!

Derby

A hefty congratulations goes out to the students of Lakeview Jr. High who reached their sales goal for the magazine sale. 4 teams of teachers raced derby style for a rewards breakfast. Although the RED team, lead by Mrs. Conley and myself, did not win...a valiant effort was made and fun was had by all!

Mrs. Conley and Miss Coppoletta take a quick picture with their horse before racing.
